Piriformis Syndrome
Understanding Piriformis Syndrome
Piriformis syndrome is a condition where the piriformis muscle: a small, deep muscle located in the buttock behind the gluteal muscles: becomes tight or spasms, compressing the sciatic nerve. This compression causes pain, tingling, and numbness that mimics sciatica.
The piriformis muscle runs from the lower spine to the top of the thighbone and helps rotate the hip. When this muscle is tight, it can irritate the sciatic nerve, which runs directly beneath or through the muscle in some individuals.
Our Treatment Approach
Our treatment begins with a thorough assessment to confirm the diagnosis and rule out spinal causes of sciatica. We then use a combination of deep soft tissue release, dry needling, nerve gliding exercises, and specific stretches to release the piriformis. Strengthening exercises for the hip and core address underlying biomechanical issues.
Benefits of Physiotherapy for Piriformis Syndrome
Targeted Relief
Specific manual therapy and stretching techniques release the piriformis muscle and reduce nerve compression.
Address Root Cause
We identify and correct biomechanical factors like hip muscle weakness, gait abnormalities, and sitting posture.
Drug-Free Solution
Avoid long-term reliance on pain medications with hands-on physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise.
Permanent Correction
Learn self-management techniques including stretches and strengthening to prevent recurrence.
