Whiplash
Understanding Whiplash
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful back-and-forth movement of the head: similar to the cracking of a whip. It most commonly occurs during rear-end motor vehicle collisions but can also result from sports injuries, falls, or other trauma.
The rapid acceleration-deceleration forces stretch and sometimes tear the soft tissues of the neck: including muscles, ligaments, and tendons. This can lead to a complex set of symptoms known as whiplash-associated disorders (WAD).
Our Treatment Approach
Our whiplash rehabilitation begins with a comprehensive assessment to determine the severity of injury and identify any red flags. We use a combination of gentle manual therapy, pain-relieving modalities, specific exercises to restore movement and strength, and ergonomic advice. Education about activity modification and reassurance about the normal recovery process is a crucial part of treatment.
Benefits of Physiotherapy for Whiplash
Early Intervention
Early physiotherapy within the first few weeks of injury leads to faster recovery and reduces the risk of chronic whiplash.
Reduce Pain
Gentle manual therapy, modalities, and specific exercises reduce neck pain and associated headaches.
Restore Motion
Controlled range-of-motion exercises prevent stiffness and help you regain full neck mobility.
Prevent Chronicity
Addressing muscle guarding, posture, and movement patterns early prevents progression to chronic whiplash syndrome.
